Golden Milk or Turmeric Tea is a traditional Ayurvedic drink made with turmeric, ginger, and other spices. This delicious warming drink has a base of creamy milk or coconut milk and is blended with ghee, coconut oil or grass-fed butter and a little bit of natural sweetener.
Golden Milk is known for promoting health and vitality and is truly something special. If you haven’t enjoyed some yet, I highly recommend it. It’s the perfect morning or afternoon drink during the colder months.
Because I’m so fond of this beautiful nourishing drink, I decided to make it into a luscious, creamy custard.
The stars of this delightful Golden Milk Custard are Jaggery, Turmeric Superghee and the spices – turmeric, ginger and cinnamon.
All of these beautiful, bold, rich flavors come together to make the most divine treat. Each bite of the Golden Milk Custard is pure bliss.
What is Jaggery
Jaggery is a traditional sweetener made by evaporating raw sugarcane juice without separating the molasses from the crystals. It is known as “panela” in South America & Mexico, “gur” in India, and is softer than refined sugar, varying in color from yellow to dark brown. Where refined sugar loses much of its nutritional content during production, jaggery contains trace minerals and vitamins, making it a truly healthier alternative sweetener. (source)
Benefits of Organic Jaggery:
- Organic jaggery contains trace minerals not found in sugar, such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and calcium.
- Organic jaggery has a richer taste as compared to refined sugar. My family describes it as having flavor notes of molasses, apricot and dark caramel.
- Organic jaggery is potent, a little goes a long way. (source)
How to Use Jaggery
Jaggery can be used as a 1:1 replacement for regular sugar or brown sugar. It comes in a big solid block {as pictured above} and can be broken off in small pieces, sliced with a knife or grated using a cheese grater.
Add jaggery to warming drinks like spiced apple cider, Golden Milk, or chai tea, homemade drinks like soda, water kefir grains or teas, baked goods like scones or muffins, or sweet treats like pies and custards. Jaggery can be used when you want to use a natural sweetener or substitute a refined white or brown sugar. It’s also lovely in savory dishes like hearty pot roast, chili, Indian dishes, etc.
What is Ghee
Ghee is a healthy, shelf-stable, casein and lactose-free alternative to butter or other cooking oils. Pure Indian Foods organic Indian ghee is made using grass fed cow’s milk. They don’t add salt, preservatives, trans fats, dyes, colors, or anything else. The only ingredient in their ghee is non-homogenized milk.
Grass fed organic ghee offers all the wonderful flavors of butter, but with the shelf life of cooking oils. Ghee is gluten-free, provides healthy fats and a buttery taste. Ghee is highly potent so a little bit goes a long way, making it last longer than an equivalent quantity of butter.
Benefits of Pure Indian Foods Ghee
- Grass-fed & USDA Certified Organic – Made in USA.
- Gourmet quality Ayurvedic ghee – made using grass-fed cow’s milk produced from spring thru fall only.
- Made from non-homogenized milk from humanely treated cows.
- Made by a fifth-generation, family-owned ghee business … since 1889. (source)
Benefits of Pure Indian Foods Spiced Ghee
- Made with the same care and passion as their original ghee.
- The only change to their flavored ghee is the addition of a special blend of herbs and spices, prepared and added during the preparation process {not after!} to the Ayurveda ghee.
- The spices add the perfect undertone of mouth-watering flavor to the ghee without being overpowering.
- It saves cooking time – the spices are already infused in the ghee.
- A little bit goes a long way and the flavors are not overpowering.
- When you don’t have a variety of spices and herbs on hand, the ghee provides the best blends for you.
- It provides nutrition – fat soluble vitamins and CLA {an essential fatty acid}. (source)
- It’s perfect for simple snacks and meals – from spreading on crackers, topping on oatmeal, basting roast chicken, spreading on grilled fish, adding to sweet treats like homemade caramels, or adding to nourishing hot chocolate.
Where to Find Jaggery & Turmeric Superghee
Although you can find jaggery in many ethnic or natural food stores, I personally would be really careful about sourcing and would avoid imported jaggery. You want to make sure you’re getting a pure, high-quality, authentic jaggery. It’s common for store-bought imported jaggery to contain lead, and you don’t want to be consuming that.
Pure Indian Foods certified organic jaggery is extracted from sugarcane plants that are grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. It is also produced without harsh chemicals and is free of lead contamination (source). I highly recommend purchasing traditionally and safely prepared jaggery from Pure Indian Foods.
Regular ghee is more commonly available at most natural food stores. I’ll be honest though, I’ve tried many and I don’t care for most brands on the market. So far, there are only two brands that I love and Pure Indian Foods is one of them. The quality of their ghee is fabulous and the flavor is so good!
Pure Indian Foods regular ghee is wonderful for everyday use, but their specialty spiced ghee’s are like no other. I especially love their Turmeric Superghee. It contains turmeric, ginger and black pepper. It’s delicious! I love that they add black pepper to this ghee because black pepper is needed to boost the turmeric to experience the true health benefits (source). The black pepper flavor is also very subtle and not overpowering at all.
Ghee has the ability to augment the effect of any herb added to it. It also helps transport the healing and health-promoting qualities of the herbs to the body (source). Just another reason why Pure Indian Foods spiced and herb ghee’s are so wonderful. They offer 7 different spiced and herb ghee blends from Digestive Ghee, to Garlic Ghee, to Herbes de Provence Ghee, etc. You can find and purchase regular ghee and the spiced herb ghee’s from Pure Indian Foods.
This delectable Golden Milk Custard features jaggery and Turmeric Superghee. And I can’t forget about the super yummy cookie crumb for the topping! These fun little bites also feature jaggery.
The Golden Milk Custard is rather simple to make, it just takes some patience to wait for it to chill {although it’s still delicious warm too … but even better cold}.
The jaggery cookie crumb comes together really fast too. If you have little ones, get them in the kitchen to help you make the cookie crumb. They will love helping measure, stir and getting their hands dirty while forming the dough.
Golden Milk Custard

Golden Milk Custard with Jaggery Cookie Crumb
The Golden Milk Custard is rather simple to make, it just takes some patience to wait for it to chill {although it’s still delicious warm too … but even better cold}.
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons organic non-GMO cornstarch or arrowroot flour
- 2 teaspoons grass-fed gelatin (<-- this is the only grass-fed gelatin I use and recommend)
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 Celtic sea salt (<-- this is my favorite sea salt)
- 2 cups raw/organic/grass-fed milk or full-fat coconut milk
- 3 pastured or organic egg yolks
- 1/3 cup Pure Indian Foods jaggery
- 2 tablespoons Pure Indian Foods Turmeric Superghee
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine corn starch or arrowroot, gelatin, ginger, cinnamon and sea salt. Set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, add egg yolks, whisk to break up the yolks. Add milk of choice and jaggery, whisk to combine {the jaggery won't completely dissolve until the cooking process}. Sprinkle the dry starch-spice mixture over the top and whisk to combine. Place saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly for about 8-10 minutes, or until bubbles start to occur and custard thickens. Once the custard becomes thick and will coat the back of a spoon, allow to cook for 1 more minute then remove from heat. Add Turmeric Superghee and vanilla extract, stir to combine. Pour custard into small glass bowls or ramekins.
- Chill custard in refrigerator for at least 4 hours before serving. Top with jaggery cookie crumb and optional homemade whipped cream or homemade meringue.
