Who loves coffee cake?!
Coffee cake is pure comfort food. You mention those words and people get a smile on their face and all of a sudden get a craving for this bliss. It’s one of those foods that brings back a special food memory for most people.
Coffee cake usually is pretty rich and can be loaded with unhealthy ingredients. Most store-bought brands are packed with refined sugar and ingredients that are not nourishing or full of quality, real food ingredients.
But, you can still have your coffee cake and eat it too when you make your own homemade, healthier version like this grain free chai spiced pear coffee cake!
I LOVE coffee cake. It reminds me of my childhood and my mom.
It makes me think of lazy Sunday weekend breakfasts, holiday brunches and afternoon snacks with hot herbal tea.
This grain free chai spiced pear coffee cake is true to it’s name – it’s delicious served with something hot. Coffee lovers will agree that it’s the perfect combo. It’s also delicious with a glass of hot tea or nourishing hot chocolate.
This grain free chai spiced pear coffee cake is full of healthier, real food ingredients.
You won’t find any processed ingredients or refined sugar in this treat, just nourishing whole foods and natural sweeteners.
It’s full of lots of quality good-for-you healthy fats, resistant starch {from the cassava flour}, collagen {it supports gut-health and it’s protein-packed, plus it helps provide a lovely, soft texture to the coffee cake} and last, but not least, WHOLE MILK KEFIR.
I am so happy to share that one of my favorite brands for cultured dairy, Nancy’s, has a newly released whole milk KEFIR! High protein, probiotic-rich, cultured, organic and WHOLE MILK from pasture-raised cows! How great is that?!
It’s almost impossible to find quality, cultured, WHOLE MILK kefir. Pretty much everything on the market is fat free or low fat.
Keep your eyes out for their whole milk kefir or request it at your local grocery stores. It comes in Plain, Vanilla, Ginger Peach and Blueberry.
If you’re new to kefir, it’s delicious in smoothies, mixed into savory casseroles, stirred into homemade salad dressings, mixed into pancake batter, added to baked goods {like this coffee cake because it helps add that “moist” aspect that is so perfect in coffee cake} and so much more.
One serving of Nancy’s Organic Probiotic Whole Milk Plain Kefir has 12 grams of protein, 64 billion live probiotics AND it’s lactose free!
So you get billions of live probiotics in every serving with 11 strains of probiotics, including clinically documented strains that help support the immune system and digestive health!
I love that they offer TRUE live probiotic cultured products. Billions of live active probiotic cultures in our diet is something we could all benefit from!
I have been using Nancy’s products for most of my life. I remember having their yogurt as a young girl and their true cultured sour cream became my favorite in my adult years.
As a kid I didn’t know much about the history of Nancy’s, I just knew that I liked the tanginess and creaminess of their yogurt. But as an adult, I learned that Nancy’s is a great company and so inline with my thoughts on real food and sustainability.
One of my favorite things about this company is that they have been focusing on sustainability and organic practices way before it became popular. I also love that they are family owned and operated in Eugene, Oregon {since 1960}.
This healthier coffee cake mixes up so quickly in the blender for a quick and simple prep.
Just add the wet ingredients, topped with the dry ingredients and give it a quick blend. Next Chop up the sweet, seasonal, juicy pears to mix into the coffee cake batter. Then add all of the chai spiced crumble ingredients to a mixing bowl and mix around until it’s all crumbly.
All of that goodness gets layered and before you know it your home will be filled with an amazing, sweet cinnamon-y, chai spiced aroma while the grain free chai spiced pear coffee cake bakes.
This coffee cake freezes well too! I like to make up a batch on a day that’s more relaxed for me, slice it up and store slices in the freezer. Then there’s a nice stash to eat throughout the week for an afternoon treat or for a fun after school/work snack.

Yes Please!! What do you suggest I use to substitute your wonderful Nancy’s Kefir?
I am in Canada as you know.. Help appreciated as I’d love to make this.. in the next while.
Thanks Carol! You could use any milk of choice or another kefir if you have that there. For dairy free you could use coconut milk. Hope that helps! 🙂
This looks delicious! I like how it’s grain free as well. Coffee cake is a treat I haven’t made in a while.
Thanks Julia! It’s such a fun treat! 🙂
This just screams fall to me! Simply stunning!
Thanks so much Jessica! 🙂
the flavor combination sounds amazing
Thanks! It’s really delicious. 🙂
Any thoughts on substituting almond flour for cassava?
Hi Suz, I haven’t tried this with almond flour. It’s possible it could work but usually almond flour recipes need a little bit more of something else – whether that’s eggs or a combo flour. Cassava flour works more like an all-purpose gluten free or regular flour and usually almond flour needs a little bit of tweaking in order to make it work the same in a recipe. I wish I could help more, but I’m just not sure.
That cake pan is so special! I love it! I just started seeing some pears this weekend at the market – can’t wait to try this!
Thanks Renee! I hope you get to try some. 🙂
This is a beautiful cake. I love Nancy’s products too…and the shape of your cake pan!
Thanks Linda! I think that mold makes cakes look so pretty. 🙂
Omg how beautiful! I’ve never used cassava flour but I’m intrigued.
Thanks so much Joni! 🙂 I hope you get to try some. It’s my favorite.
I love that you added kefir to this! Such a great boost of protein!
Yes! Such an awesome boost! 🙂
This looks so yummy, and I can’t believe you get all those probiotics in a dessert recipe!
I’m not sure how much of them retain after being heated, but it sure makes the cake soft and moist.
Absolutely stunning looking cake 🙂 Love that you use pear, cassava and chia spices in it. I bet the cake tastes delicious! Kefir is my secret ingredient too I put in most of my baking to act as a raising agent (besides how delicious it tastes) – it makes super moist and soft baked goods, doesn’t it?
Isn’t kefir great?! I love that you use it too.
Wow, when I first saw this I wasn’t expecting to see kefir in there! What a delicious and beautiful looking cake!
Thanks so much Monique! 🙂
This cake is so beautiful, and I love that it’s made with pears! I’m always deep into apple desserts, and just need a good reminding that pears are just as fabulous!

I am all about Chai spice! This looks absolutely wonderful with the pears and spices!
Chai spice is the best! 🙂
This is such a gorgeous cake, and I love the idea of chai spices with pears. (In my opinion, pears are very underrated.) I’ve been looking for a good kefir, so I’ll have to see if I can find Nancy’s! It sounds amazing.
