Hi, I’m Emily Criswell! (formerly Sunwell-Vidaurri)
I grew up in the 80s, the time when everything was processed and low-fat this and fat-free that. I devoured sugary foods, craved boxed Mac n’ Cheese, ate lots of mainstream cereals and grew up around family members who had veggie fridge drawers stocked with sodas. Yes I had healthy foods in my diet too, but a lot of the 80s food that we all ate was easy to make and highly processed.
Those foods were tricking my body into believing that they were wonderful, but they didn’t help nourish my body.
By the time I hit my mid 20s, I decided this way of eating wasn’t working for me and I knew I had to change things before having my first baby. I drastically changed my diet and stopped drinking soda and eating fast food. But that wasn’t enough for me.
After I had my first daughter, my health took a huge turn … and not in a good way. I couldn’t gain weight, I had constant tummy/gut health issues and I was anemic. After getting tested, I found out that my body could not tolerate gluten and my gut was a mess. I knew I had to make some BIG changes to my diet and lifestyle.
I’ve spent 18+ years on my real food and natural living journey. Along the way I’ve hit some bumps on the curvy road … frustrations with how to make changes, family health challenges, food sensitivities and allergies, toxic mold problems, extremely tight budget pressures and figuring out how to balance it all – so I get it.
I'm a work-at-home, single mom, living in Northern California with my kids. Our daily life is mixed with homeschooling, lots of play, as much outdoor time as possible, eating (because my kids are bottomless pits that are always ready for the next meal), never-ending dishes (see above 👆- those cute little vultures) because we make a lot of real food meals from scratch … and I’m always looking for ways to get meals on the table faster.

Are there egg-free, dairy-free and nut-free recipes?
Yes! For my Low-Carb cookbook: Most of the recipes are egg-free and nut-free! Many of the recipes do include dairy, however lots of them are adaptable and some list dairy-free substitutions.
Are there allergy-friendly recipes included?
Yes! All of the recipes in this cookbook support your family’s wellness with real, nourishing and gluten-free ingredients. Although all of the recipes are gluten-free (and grain-free in the Low-Carb cookbook), many are easily adaptable. Many recipes can be made grain-free, dairy-free, nut-free and several can be made Paleo-friendly. All recipes are soy-free.
Are there vegetarian options?
Yes there are plenty of veggie-options included!
What sweeteners are used in the recipes?
All recipes use natural sweeteners - most use honey or maple syrup. Some recipes use maple sugar or other natural sweeteners. There are some options that list organic cane or powdered sugar, but they are listed as alternatives to the natural sweeteners listed in the ingredients. In my Low-Carb cookbook, all recipes use low-carb sweeteners such as erythritol and/or liquid stevia.
