Need to relax after a long day? After dinner is the perfect time to unwind. This soothing Calming After Dinner Herbal Tea helps quiet the mind, calm your body + helps take away the stress of the day.
I have been making this tea since my first daughter was born. It's so helpful when things seem a bit overwhelming or when you or your little one needs some help sleeping. It's great when your body is tired and sore. Have an upset stomach? It helps with that too.
Calming After Dinner Tea Herbs
Chamomile
Chamomile is known as the "night-time" or "sleepy time" tea. It's useful before bed, helps calm the stomach and helps quiet the mind to lull you to sleep. It adds a light, earthy, sweet floral flavor to the tea.
Catnip
Catnip is known to help calm the mind, body and stomach + help promote sleep. It has been said to help with nightmares too. It adds a fresh, mild + sweet grassy flavor with a hint of mint to the tea.
Fennel Seeds
Fennel seeds are known to help with digestion, soothe the stomach and help boost milk supply in breastfeeding women. It's also known to help calm colic or gassiness in babies. They add a clean, sweet flavor to the tea.
Lavender
Lavender is known to help promote relaxation, soothe an upset stomach, calm nerves and support a restful sleep. It adds a fresh floral flavor to the tea.
Spearmint
Spearmint is known to help calm stomach aches and help with nausea. It adds a sweet, pleasant flavor to the tea.
Rose Hips
Rose hips are not a calming herb, but I love to add them to this tea for their high vitamin C content. They add a sweet flavor to the tea.
This beautiful combination of herbs is full flavored with a hint of mint. I love to serve it with a generous spoonful of honey ... for an extra special sweetness {but it's delicious without honey too}.
The tea mixture would make a lovely homemade gift. Who doesn't need a little help relaxing + calm in their life? I love giving herbal tea blends as gifts to friends. I love receiving them too! Getting homemade tea feels like it's filled with so much LOVE because someone took the time to think of how the tea would help you.
Sharing this can be as easy as filing a mason jar with the tea blend ... or you can add a special touch by tying a beautiful ribbon around the jar with a little homemade label {write instructions for the tea on the back}. I love these beautiful vintage-inspired blue or green mason jars too. They are so pretty on their own, but would add an extra special touch to the gift.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Combine all herbs in a medium mixing bowl. Stir to evenly distribute herbs. Store in and airtight glass container {like a mason jar} if you're not making the tea right away.
To Make the Tea:
- In a medium-size saucepan or tea kettle, bring filtered water to a boil. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
- Add 2 tablespoons of the herbal tea to the hot water. COVER and steep for 5-7 minutes {a maximum of 10 minutes}.
- When the tea is done steeping, strain tea with a fine mesh strainer into a heatproof bowl or glass jar/container.
- Serve hot with a generous spoonful of honey - if desired.
Notes
YOU WILL NEED: Medium-Size Saucepan with Lid or Tea Kettle, Medium Bowl, Quart Mason Jar or Heat Proof Glass Container or Bowl, Fine Mesh Stainer, Mason Jar for Storage
STORAGE: Store extra herbal tea {NOT the herb blend} in the refrigerator for up to a week.
NOTE: Catnip becomes bitter if placed into boiling water. It's important to allow the water to cool for at least 5 minutes before adding the herbs. Chamomile and Catnip both become bitter the longer they steep. Keep steeping to a maximum of 10 minutes for this tea.
Make as much of the tea mixture as you need - double, triple, quadruple, etc.
Usually I use a local raw creamed clover honey. Manuka honey is lovely too, a bit more expensive, but a little goes a long way, plus it's known for having healing properties that do not break down in heat.

This looks great. Even the photos are restful to look at. 🙂 A great family blend for all occasions. One of these days I'll make enough time to start blending my own teas again. Tea bags can be great for the busy seasons. But it's so rewarding to make your own blends!
Emily Sunwell-Vidaurri
Thanks Megan! Very true ... I buy organic green tea in bags for my husband, but for blends, I love making my own.
