Grain Free Apple Cobbler is such a special fall treat. This humble comfort food is naturally sweetened, perfectly spiced and brimming with apples.
Apple Cobbler is one of my favorite fall treats. It's the perfect fall food in my opinion. Well at least it's one of them. I love all things pumpkin and squash too.
I love that apple cobbler's are super easy to make. Don't get me wrong, I love a good apple pie, but I don't love the extra time it takes to chill pie dough and roll it out.
Apples are usually very affordable compared to other fall fruit. You can find them at any farmer's market and local grocery stores. Maybe you're fortunate enough to live in a town that has u-pick apple orchards too! Taking advantage of u-pick's is a usually a great way to save money, get lots in bulk and they don't spoil fast {apples do really well in cold storage}.
Just make sure to get organic apples! Apples are on the EWG's "Dirty Dozen" list. This means apples are on the top of the list for most heavily pesticide contaminated produce. No good. So make sure and stick to organic apples.
Apples are not only great for eating as is, but they're also amazing in homemade applesauce, soups like butternut squash soup, drinks like spiced cider, sautéed and topped on pancakes, dried as chips and even in Thanksgiving side dishes like stuffing and cherry cranberry sauce.
And of course, apples are perfect in cobblers, crisps, galettes and pies!
This grain free apple cobbler is so delicious!
Especially for breakfast! I mean really, cobblers, crisps and pies were actually meant for breakfast. Right? Well maybe not, but in my opinion they are absolutely meant to be served with breakfast.
Yes of course, cobblers are delicious as dessert. My family loves to top warm apple cobbler with homemade vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. Oh so good!!!
But, my favorite way to enjoy leftover apple cobbler is with breakfast the next morning. Such a special treat!
Make sure to enjoy some apple cobbler while apples are in season!
Grain Free Apple Cobbler
Seasonal Grain Free Apple Cobbler
Grain Free Apple Cobbler is such a special fall treat. This humble comfort food is naturally sweetened, perfectly spiced and brimming with apples.
Ingredients
For the filling:
- 12 medium size organic apples, peeled, cored, sliced or chopped
- Juice of 1 lemon {about 2 tablespoons}
- 2 tablespoons Otto's cassava flour (<-- this is the only cassava flour I use and recommend) or arrowroot flour
- ½ cup maple sugar or light-colored honey {I like this and this brand}
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (<-- this is my favorite orangutan-safe sustainable cinnamon)
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
For the cobbler topping:
- 1 ½ cups Otto's cassava flour (<-- this is the only cassava flour I use and recommend)
- ¼ cup maple sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon Celtic sea salt (<-- this is my favorite sea salt)
- ½ cup cold grass-fed butter, cut into tablespoons or small cubes
- 8 ounces organic cultured sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons organic milk, organic cream, melted butter/ghee - optional
- 1-2 tablespoons maple sugar, for dusting – optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Add sliced or chopped apples to a large mixing bowl. Add lemon juice and cassava flour or arrowroot powder, maple sugar, vanilla extract and spices, gently stir to combine. Pour into pie dish. Set aside.
- In a separate large mixing bowl, combine cassava flour, maple sugar, baking soda and sea salt. Give it a quick stir to evenly distribute. Add cold butter. Using clean hands, gently start to break up and mix the butter into the flour mixture. Make sure to keep the butter somewhat intact and in small pieces. Take care not to over mix. Add sour cream and vanilla. Mix just until incorporated, the dough will be slightly moist and a little crumbly.
- Smooth cobbler dough over the top of the apple filling, making sure to evenly distribute the dough. Use a basting brush or spoon to coat the top of the cobbler dough with milk/cream/melted fat. Sprinkle maple sugar over the top of the cobbler dough.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes or until filling is bubbling and cobbler topping is light golden brown.
- Allow to cool on a wire rack at room temperature for 20 minutes before serving. Serve warm or cold with or without homemade vanilla ice cream or honey sweetened whipped cream.
Notes
Please note, I do not recommend any other brand of cassava flour. There are lots of knock off brands on the market and they simply do not compare. I have not tried making this with any other flours. I do not recommend substituting the cassava flour with almond flour or coconut flour. Both will change the consistency of the cobbler topping.
Storage: Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Just wondering if I can sub or leave out the sour cream?
Also, can Ghee be used in place of butter?
Thank you.
Emily Sunwell-Vidaurri
Ghee is a great substitute for butter. 🙂 You would need to substitute for the sour cream, you wouldn't be able to omit it because it’s the moisture for the dough. I’m sure you could try substituting something else – maybe a coconut based yogurt?
Julia
Can you omit the sour creme if you are dairy free?
Emily Sunwell-Vidaurri
Hi Julia, no you can't omit the sour cream because it's the moisture for the dough. I'm sure you could try substituting something else though - maybe a coconut based yogurt?
Sharon

Shima
Hey Emily, you didn't specify what size pan to use. I am assuming it's a regular pie pan?? And I'm dairy-free so I'm thinking maybe some coconut milk, and add a little extra cassava or tapioca flour? Maybe add in a little extra ghee?
Really looking forward to making this tonight for dessert. Thank you.
Emily Sunwell-Vidaurri
Hi Shima, I guess I didn't make it very clear, oops! Just a standard size pie dish for this recipe. You could try the coconut milk and ghee in place of the sour cream, but I probably wouldn't add more cassava flour because it tends to make things too dry if too much is added. I hope that helps some. 🙂
