There's nothing like a bowl of summer bolognese.
Ragù alla bolognese is a delicious, traditional Italian dish that is fit for a king, yet total comfort food.
This thick sauce is typically full of ground meat, onions, celery and carrots all combined and cooked into a mouthwatering tomato base.
Bolognese is one of those sauces that everyone's grandmother made this way or that. There are so many variations, but they all tend to have that authentic, traditional base.
Seasonal produce is the best when it comes to homemade sauces!
There's just nothing like the flavor of fresh, vine ripe, summer tomatoes and beautiful, vibrant fresh herbs like basil and Italian parsley. Garlic is also abundant this time of the year and this sauce has a lot of it!
I don't know about you, but I LOVE fresh herbs! I think they add a wonderful flavor component to any dish.
Fresh herbs are especially wonderful in homemade sauces in my opinion. Dried herbs are fine too, but there's something about fresh herbs. It's like they add in layers of flavor and you just can't get that layered vibrant flavor from using dried herbs.
You'll find fresh basil and Italian parsley, LOTS of fresh garlic, onion, juicy summer tomatoes, celery, carrots, mushrooms {which are optional, but highly recommended}, a little bit of organic bacon and a lot of grass-fed ground beef in this summer bolognese.
There's also another common, traditional ingredient in this ragù sauce - milk. It sounds weird, but it's pretty standard. To make it Paleo-friendly, use coconut milk or a creamy nut milk like almond or cashew milk.
This rich, summer bolognese gluten free spaghetti is full of summer goodness and hearty, organic meat.

Summer Bolognese Gluten Free Spaghetti
Summer Bolognese Gluten Free Spaghetti
Overflowing with seasonal tomatoes, this hearty Summer Bolognese gluten free spaghetti is sure to please. This classic, simple meat-based ragù sauce is brimming with summer produce and is pure comfort food when served over gluten free spaghetti, zoodles or spaghetti squash.
Ingredients
- 4 oz organic bacon, diced
- ¼ cup butter or ghee, melted or avocado oil
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 8 oz button or cremini mushrooms, sliced – optional
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 1 carrot, diced
- 9 fresh garlic cloves, minced or grated (approx. 1 garlic bulb)
- 2 lb grass-fed ground beef
- 1 cup organic chicken broth or beef broth
- 1 ½ cup organic milk or non-dairy milk
- 1 ½ cup diced tomatoes – fresh or jar (with liquid)
- 2 tablespoon freshly chopped basil
- 2 tablespoon freshly chopped Italian parsley
- 1 ½ teaspoon mineral-rich salt
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Gluten free spaghetti, cooked according to manufacturer’s instructions (See Notes)
- Freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano – for garnish
Instructions
- In a large sauce pan or pot, cook the bacon over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until crispy. Remove bacon from bacon grease and transfer to a plate, set aside.
- Using the same sauce pan or pot, discard any bacon grease (a little leftover is fine) and add healthy fat of choice, melt over medium heat. Add the onion and mushrooms and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until they start to soften a bit. Add the celery and carrots, and stir occasionally for another 7 minutes until the onions and mushrooms start to lightly caramelize. Add the garlic, stirring occasionally and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add the ground beef, breaking up with a wooden spoon and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Add the reserved bacon, broth, milk of choice, tomatoes, basil, parsley, salt and pepper. Increase the heat and bring to a low boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for about 7 minutes, just until all of the flavors come together.
- While your sauce is simmering, prepare your gluten free spaghetti according to manufacturer’s directions.
- Combine and toss the spaghetti and sauce together – or – add a small portion of the sauce to the spaghetti, give it a good toss, then ladle the remaining sauce over the top.
- Serve immediately topped with freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano.
Notes
- For a Paleo-friendly or grain-free version, use zucchini zoodles or spaghetti squash instead of the gluten free pasta.
- For a dairy-free version, make sure to use a non-dairy milk like coconut milk or a creamy nut milk like cashew or almond milk.
- My family loves and uses pasture-raised regenerative chicken from U.S. family run farms, delivered straight to your doorstep, at affordable wholesale prices. Get 20% OFF for Life + Free Shipping for Life + $15 OFF your first box here - no code needed.
