DIY natural Homemade Herbal Mouthwash is so easy to make! This version gives you that clean and fresh feeling plus it helps keep your teeth and gums healthy too.
Okay, here's the deal, mainstream mouthwashes are loaded with not-so-great ingredients like food coloring and alcohol. And natural mouthwashes, well, I haven't found one yet that is completely full of ingredients that I consider safe, "clean" and healthy for teeth.
So many natural mouthwashes have glycerin, and that's a big no-no in my opinion. Glycerin is not good for teeth. It basically coats the teeth making it incredibly hard to actually brush your teeth clean. If you want more info on this, you can check out an amazing book called Cure Tooth Decay.
But back to DIY mouthwash.
Did you know it's so easy to make your own mouthwash?
We all love having that minty-fresh feeling in our mouth. I mean really, who wants to have stale breath in the morning or at night? There's just something so refreshing about having a fresh feeling mouth.
I am all about the minty flavor, but in my opinion, it's also important to have a mouthwash that helps care for the teeth and gums too.
Adding in trace minerals and authentic Celtic sea salt is a must. These trace minerals help support the teeth {remineralization} and they help support healthy gums too. Plus the sea salt also helps take care of all of the nasty stuff {a.k.a "germies" ... yes that's a word in my book} that you don’t want hanging around in your mouth and on your tongue.
So ditch the store-bought stuff and try making your own Easy Homemade Herbal Mouthwash instead.

Easy Homemade Herbal Mouthwash
DIY natural Homemade Herbal Mouthwash is so easy to make! This version gives you that clean and fresh feeling plus it helps keep your teeth and gums healthy too.
Materials
- 2 cups filtered water
- 1 teaspoon Celtic sea salt (<-- this is my favorite sea salt)
- 1 teaspoon trace minerals drops
- 4 drops therapeutic-grade spearmint dietary essential oil*
- 4 drops therapeutic-grade peppermint dietary essential oil*
- 2 drops therapeutic-grade clove dietary essential oil*
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a large measuring cup {or add directly to the storage container you're using}. Give it a good stir then pour into storage container - I use either a 16 oz. Mason Jar, 4oz Amber Glass Bottles, or a clean empty apple cider vinegar bottle.
- Add the lid to your container and give it a good shake.
- Use twice a day, morning and night, or as often as needed. Make sure to shake well before using.
Notes
YOU WILL NEED: Large Glass Measuring Cup, 16 oz. Mason Jar, 4oz Amber Glass Bottles, or a Clean Empty Apple Cider Vinegar Bottle
For a Kid-Friendly Version: Omit the above essential oils and replace with 6-8 drops of therapeutic-grade orange, lemon or tangerine essential oils* {or a blend of all 3}. If you kids prefer a sweeter flavor, you can also add 5-10 drops of liquid stevia.
Storage: For safety, store the mouthwash in the refrigerator for one week. Some people have concerns about water and bacteria growth. While the sea salt helps to some degree, it's best to either store the mouthwash in the refrigerator or make up fresh batches a couple times a week. My family goes through it rather quickly, so I usually just keep mine on the bathroom counter because we go through it so fast. Note: Please make sure to use filtered water, do NOT use tap water.
*A Note about Essential Oils: I only use these Vitality™ dietary essential oils that are therapeutic-grade and would never use other essential oils on/in my body. I choose these essential oils because they are unrivaled in their quality and they are not adulterated with synthetic substances like most store-bought oils {which are perfume grade}.
*If you're a nursing mom, omit the peppermint essential oil since peppermint is known to decrease milk production. Peppermint essential oil should also be used with caution for children and should be avoided with children under 6 years old. Clove essential oil should be avoided with children under 2 years old. Women who are pregnant should use caution with clove essential oil and make sure to consult with your midwife or healthcare practitioner first. Pregnant women should also use caution with peppermint essential oil towards the end of pregnancy, again, make sure to consult with your midwife or healthcare practitioner first.

I need to try this! I've got a sensitive spot on one of my molars, and I love the idea of rinsing out any underlying infection with antibacterial salt and EOs!
Emily Sunwell-Vidaurri

Erika Ravnsborg
This looks fabulous . I'll have to give that a try one of these days . It has a good shelf life right ?
Emily Sunwell-Vidaurri
Thanks! No, it doesn't have preservatives in it so it doesn't have a long shelf life. It's best to store it in the refrigerator for a week and make up batches weekly.
