Blackberry Honey Ice Cream is so delicious and perfect for summertime! It's purple color is absolutely beautiful, it's super easy to make, naturally sweetened and only has a few real food ingredients.
Homemade blackberry ice cream is so easy to make!
I don't know about you, but I'm a huge believer in enjoying ice cream year round.
Seriously friends, no matter what the weather is, ice cream is always acceptable. This is your real food ice cream-loving fanatic talking here. Yes ... I love ice cream ... I really, really, really do.
During the winter I love ice creams like orange creamsicle, lemon and pumpkin cheesecake ice cream.
When spring arrives, I love ice creams like cherry and raspberry swirl.
During the fall I love ice creams like honey vanilla, chai and sweet carrot.
And during the summer the ice cream possibilities are endless! I love peach, strawberry, chocolate, mint chip, brownie cheesecake, concord grape, cookie dough, watermelon and on and on.
My ice cream maker doesn't have dust on it. I proudly use it all the time and my family thanks me for it.
Who am I kidding? I can't get enough of that delectable, creamy, smooth yumminess too. I have no shame or guilt around this.
Let me explain ... life is short. It's that simple.
I am not a fan of depriving yourself of foods that you really love.
Food is meant to be enjoyed!
When you make ice cream from scratch, you get to decide what ingredients go in it.
So use ingredients that make you happy and feel good. But most of all, enjoy it!
I'm not saying that I believe in a diet filled with treats {I'm a real foodie + I love nutrient-dense healthy food, but I'm not perfect either}.
Of course you don't have to eat special treats all the time.
But if you want to have a bowl of ice cream for breakfast, go for it! I’m not judging. I have been known to indulge in some homemade ice cream for breakfast. Ice cream is delicious with homemade waffles too!
I know some of you still have snow on the ground and it's cold out. But since it is officially spring, and I live in sunny Northern California, I thought I'd share another one of my favorite homemade ice creams.
This is my way of sending some love and "sunshine" to you and a little bit of spring and summer.
This blackberry honey ice cream is the prettiest purple color!
And it's everything! Seriously good and oh so special! My kids look forward to blackberry honey ice cream every year. My youngest specifically requests it as soon as we see blackberries showing up at the market.
This ice cream is naturally sweetened and can be made dairy-free.
Honey is the star paired with the blackberries. The two together are so perfect when blended into the creamy ice cream base. My kiddos love to drizzle local blackberry honey over the ice cream for an extra special treat, and I have to admit it's SO GOOD with honey drizzled on top. Give it a try!
I hope you enjoy this blackberry honey ice cream as much as my family does. It's a seasonal favorite and I hope you get to enjoy some throughout the summertime.
Blackberry Honey Ice Cream
Blackberry Honey Ice Cream
Blackberry Honey Ice Cream is so delicious and perfect for summertime! It's purple color is absolutely beautiful, it's super easy to make, naturally sweetened and only has a few real food ingredients. {Paleo | Primal | Dairy-Free Option}
Ingredients
- 2 cups raw, organic or grass-fed cream
- 2 cups organic frozen blackberries {fresh is fine too, see Notes}
- ¼ cup light colored raw honey {not wildflower, see Notes}
- 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons grass-fed collagen
- 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder - optional
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to the blender. Blend until smooth and combined, about 15-30 seconds*. No blackberry chunks should remain.
- Place strainer over large measuring cup or bowl. Pour blackberry mixture through the strainer. Use the back of a large spoon to help push the liquid through the strainer, leaving blackberry seeds behind. Discard the seeds.
- Prepare ice cream maker. Turn ice cream maker on and pour strained blackberry mixture into the ice cream maker. Churn according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Ice cream will start to have a “soft serve” texture {mine takes about 20 minutes}. Serve immediately or freeze until desired consistency. Use a wooden spoon to transfer ice cream to a large airtight freezer safe container. Make sure to lick the spoon when you’re done!
Notes
YOU WILL NEED: Blender, Glass Measuring Cup or Medium Size Bowl, Fine Mesh Strainer, Ice Cream Maker
DAIRY FREE VERSION: Substitute full-fat coconut milk for the dairy.
- Make sure to use a lighter honey like clover, star thistle or orange blossom {wild flower varieties are too strong for this flavor combo}. I have used this and this honey brand before.
- *I run my ice cream maker for about 20-25 minutes until it's a thick soft-serve consistency. My family loves it like this. If we're not eating it right away, I usually place it in the freezer for a few hours to firm up a bit.
- Fresh blackberries are wonderful, but try and freeze them ahead of time first. Freezing them helps the ice cream form quicker. If that’s not a option, fresh is fine, it just takes longer for the ice cream to come together.
- If you don’t use raw dairy, look for high quality organic cream from cows that graze on grass {grassfed/pastured}. Ideally, look for products that do not ultra-pasturize their products.
- I use cold water soluble {flavorless} grass-fed collagen for the nutrition and extra protein boost.
- I use arrowroot powder which is totally optional, but it does help in the thickening the ice cream just a bit.
STORAGE: Cover in an airtight freezer safe container and store in freezer for up to 2 weeks.
I only recommend using a quality grass-fed collagen. Knowing the source and where the collagen comes from is very important. My favorite brand is Perfect Supplements Hydrolyzed Collagen. I am so impressed with the quality of their collagen + they're the only company on the market that I know of that is 100% pesticide free and has proof of purity.

Emily, we ARE kindred spirits. Many years ago I used to eat Ben & Jerry's- lots of it and big portions. I thought/began to be concerned, literally, I would die of a heart attack. (I knew I needed grass-fed cream and not to be eating conventional sugar.) It was truly one of the reasons we opened our first frozen yogurt shop! (As a little girl I dreamed of having a soft serve machine in my pantry.) Once open, I ate dark chocolate frozen yogurt every day, sometimes twice. My point is- I LOVE LOVE LOVE ice cream like you do. Sometimes I'd add a dollop of our latest seasonal flavor and I always enjoyed making new flavors. I never understood why business slowed down in the fall and winter. I certainly didn't eat less ice cream during the colder months. LOL. And now, even on the GAPS Diet, well, that's what inspired our whole Paleo line of honey and maple syrup sweetened cultured ice creams. My private passions have fueled this business, lol.
Your entire text leading up to the recipe was delightful to read. Your recipe is SO beautiful. I need to add collagen sometimes to my recipes. SUCH a good idea. I love your pungent color and flavor MIXED with all that cream~ how lovely!
Emily Sunwell-Vidaurri
I love that you agree on the kindred spirits xo. I also used to eat lots of Ben & Jerry's 😉 I LOVE how your love for it turned into your business. It's so wonderful that you offer the Paleo options! I hope to make it up your way one day and get to sample some of your deliciousness at your cafes + give you a big hug.
I lucked out on that gorgeous purple color. I just happened to get a batch of super dark blackberries ... mixed with the cream, oh my goodness that color. It sure made me happy. What you don't see is Tiny Love trying to make her way to the ice cream lol. She was right by my side during the photo shoot. Luckily I got a few good shots in before her hand reached up to taste the ice cream.
Rachel
